What are healthy places?
Healthy places are environments that support health, safety, and wellbeing through their physical and social characteristics. They may include:
neighbourhoods, towns, and cities
workplaces and educational settings
transport systems and public spaces
Key factors considered include access to services, housing quality, environmental exposures, opportunities for physical activity, social connection, and perceptions of safety.
Healthy places are descriptive, not prescriptive. They explain observed patterns in communities but do not determine individual health outcomes.
How environments influence health and wellbeing
Research shows that environments influence health in multiple ways:
Physical conditions: air quality, noise, heat, and access to green space can affect comfort and health risks.
Built environment features: design of streets, parks, and transport affects movement and access to services.
Social environments: inclusion, safety, and community interaction impact mental wellbeing and participation.
These relationships are complex and interdependent, and evidence generally describes associations rather than direct causation.
Healthy places and everyday life
People constantly interact with their surroundings. Housing, transport, workplaces, schools, and public spaces all shape daily experiences.
Experiences differ based on age, mobility, location, and personal circumstances.
A setting supportive for one person may present challenges for another.
The focus of public-interest discussions is understanding patterns rather than prescribing behaviours or interventions.
What healthy places are not
They are not technical standards, planning manuals, or regulatory guidance.
They are not substitutes for healthcare, social services, or professional advice.
They do not guarantee outcomes or advocate for specific policies or developments.
